You can judge a book by its cover… but you are only guessing until you actually read the book.
I write books. I illustrate the covers. You are judging my work whether you read the books or not. You see the covers and assume things.
My Black Death series shows black hands killing white women. What do you assume?
Most things are what they appear to be. It would be stupid to assume otherwise. It would bring our lives to a halt to thoroughly examine everything.
I bothered to write books and illustrate the
covers. I created the title font. Human nature is lazy… yet I was not. You can
assume, without knowing anything else, that there was a point to bother. Maybe you should too.
The cover provides an image of how the work should be perceived. If that is all you see, then there is no depth to your perception. The work must be read to truly be experienced.
ReplyDeleteYes. The covers are meant for the first impression. The final impression comes from venturing to what is underneath the cover.
DeleteWithout reading the stories the killer's hands are of a cold stranger, but when we explore further those hands become familiar and even endearing. The word gives context and meaning. Without the word an image is open to interpretation.
ReplyDeleteYes. The image is shallow accordingly. Every picture, even about real things, is meaningless without context.
DeleteThe concept of judging a book by its cover is a real thing. people put a negative spin on that, but it's something that needs consideration. There are usually 3 main things that will get people to read your book. The cover design comes first, and if that impresses, then they read the blurb on the back or the synopsis on the website, and if that passes muster, they have to get through the first chapter. If all three is a pass, then the book will probably get read.
